The Aufzien Family Center for Prevention and Treatment of Parkinson's Disease

The Aufzien Family Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Parkinson's Disease (APPD) has been established by a generous donation from the Aufzien Family to promote and enhance research towards better treatment and prevention of Parkinson's Disease. The APPD is an academic Center at The Faculty of Medicine and Sagol School of Neuroscience at Tel Aviv University, which serves as a hub for innovative translational research in Parkinson's Disease. The center has a grant program and educational activities to support cutting-edge research towards better treatment and prevention, or slowing down of Parkinson's Disease progression. The Center holds monthly seminars, annual international symposiums and active student exchange programs and promotes Parkinson’s research conducted on campus and at affiliated hospitals, working toward the development of novel drugs, therapies and diagnostic technologies for Parkinson’s Disease.

Steering Committee

Israel Parkinson is led by a Steering Committee, composed of the Israeli Movement Disorders Society steering committee members (IMDS, part of the Israel Neurological Association), who are leading experts in the field of movement disorders and the directors of the Aufzien Center. The Steering Committee provides strategic direction, support, guidance and oversight of the Israel Parkinson Initiative.

The current Chairman of the Israel Parkinson Steering Committee is Prof. Nir Giladi.

Members of the Steering Committee

Prof. Nir Giladi, Co-Director

Nir Giladi, M.D., is a renowned leader in the field of movement disorders, Full Professor at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv University and chairman of the Neurological Institute at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center.

His research interests are in the field of gait, falls, cognition and genetics in Parkinson's Disease (PD). Over the past two decades, Prof. Giladi has devoted much of his time to research regarding unique aspects of gait, the prodromal stage of PD, focusing on biological markers of early detection and predicting the conversion from a subject at risk to a patient with PD. He has been leading various large-scale research endeavors to clinically and epidemiologically characterize the Ashkenazi Jewish Parkinson’s Disease population in Israel and to identify genes that influence the risk of developing the disease in this population. He has also been involved in exploring new interventions for patients with PD and in clinical trials phase 1-4 with new technologies treating movement disorders of different kinds as well as community-based epidemiological studies. Giladi and his clinical and research groups are focused on two major goals: a strive to give the best neurological care possible to the patients in there care and to find a cure for Parkinson's disease.
